Why is this issue important?
This is where the future is headed. Without enough people in STEM careers, there will be much less advances made in health and medicine, machinery, any form of structure or building.

Government made groups and foundations to improve the quality of STEM teaching.
What are the current approaches?
The same foundations from the past but trying different things ex. National Science Foundation
Obama gave $2.5 million to the National Science Foundation as part of the economic stimulus package
